Title- Santa Muerte
Artist: Martha Gonzalez
Medium: Photoshop
Size: 36cm x 36cm
Santa Muerte was inspired by La Calavera Catrina done by Jose Posada. My original goal was to completely animate myself and the bone but that was extremely difficult. Not only was it difficult, but when I figured out how to do it- Santa Muerte no longer possessed the feeling I wanted her to have. Having a solid skull and face gave the meaning more power, so i kept it that way.

Title- Holy Matrimonio
Artist: Martha Gonzalez
Medium: Scratch Board, Wood and Fabric
Size: 43.18cm x 25.4 cm
Holy Matrimonio was based off of Jose Posadas "La Calavera Catrina". She is a symbol in Latin culture for Day of the Dead, and I wanted to show people that death goes beyond just plain death. That was what Posada did, and I wanted to show it in a 3D way. What better way to show life after death then a marriage? Till Death do you Part goes long way, doesn't it?

Title- La Calavera Martina
Artist: Martha Gonzalez
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas Size: 91.44 cm X 91.44 cm La Calavera Martina was originally supposed to be a replica of Vincent Van Gogh's "Skull" series done in the late 1800's. As I painted, I found that my painting was more of a blended and smooth variation, unlike Van Gogh who used bigger strokes and less bending. The canvas was elf made, using wood, canvas cloth secured by stables and coated with gesso to prepare it for the acrylic. |

Title- Ladies in Waiting
Artist: Martha Gonzalez
Medium: Oil and Acrylic on wood
Size: 60.96 cm X 38.1 cm
Ladies in Waiting was inspired by the idea of sexual identification. Most people hide it and so instead of faces I gave them animal skulls. I used oil to challenge myself on the background and on the bodies themselves I used acrylic.
